Snowshoes!

Nice self-portrait, eh? Snow in Iowa, it is a normal thing. People here seem to get out in the cold weather, it is just how it is. I like to try to get out as much as i can but what else is there to really do? I received a new set of Snowshoes as a gift and realized it might be the perfect option to get out more - thanks Anne and Chad by the way. Fact is I don't really like working out inside and options in the winter can be a bit limited so I was excited to give it a go. My first outing was with Chad over Christmas in Ames, IA and I had a great time. When we returned home I knew I wanted to give my local Mountain Bike spot, Ulrich Park a try. The best part is how close it is to home and how rough the trails are. It is protected from the wind with so many trees so it is always a little nicer in the woods than running or riding out in the open. I also like that is has a lot of up and down trails, it makes it a decent work-out and rather interesting. If it is 15 degrees or warmer it is not bad at all in the woods-especially once you get moving. I have gone a few times since the pictures and there is always something new to see. I am usually chasing a deer around or following tracks and have yet to run into another person our there. I realize I have not included a picture of the shoes or poles. It was a package from L.L Bean, excellent quality and worth the investment, they seem very durable. Sure they were a gift, but I'd easily buy another pair. In fact I am thinking of getting the kids a pair for some good old family fun.
I have not given up on my bike this winter, I'll post soon on my new studded snow tires and the fun that can be. I've been out a few times on the bike when the temps are warmer. I'll also be posting some details on a few S&S retrofits I have to work on. Until then, you can see a little more detail on Ulrich Park below.
